Remembering World Hoop Day 2008

remembering the Gili Islands - one of the most remote places in Indonesia - off the coast of Lombok - I gifted these girls my hoops - just before World Hoop Day 2008 - the same day my sister and I found out about our father's heart attack... the beginning of the 2 month roller coaster until we lost him...

the beautiful part was to hear later that the village ended up having hoop contests and that the hoops became a treasured possession for girls and the community.

this is an island that has NO cars, NO police, NO real LAWs other than just village hierarchy of families / completely unique, local tradition...and now... they have HOOPS too...

this is what WORLD HOOP DAY is about - Hoops bring amazing joy to all and sharing them is a beautiful thing!! I can't count the number of hoops I've gifted (across the WORLD!) seriously --

Sharing and Gifting your hoops is truly the best thing you can do...

WORLD HOOP DAY is 9/9/09
SHARE iT!

MUSIC / HOOPING / INSPiRATION

music buying rampage I'll tell you what. I've realized that for classes we need serious music iNSPiRADO. I'm beginning to compile what I call my HOOPFRESH playlists.

This is to get me / us moving harder and more inspired. I've always been so focused on maneuvers and developing and executing tricks - that I've hooped a lot in silence. This is definitely changing... also with my practice in Contact Juggling I'm enjoying music to practice and respond to... it's because I'm not very good at CJ yet - so music helps inspire movement ideas --- it's very fun fun fun...
so I'm on the hunt... more good music... THANK YOU PANDORA - I'm discovering SOOO MUCH right now... music listening and discovery takes a lot of time... normally I should be working / developing my own stuff. it'll come... but I'm having quite a blast with this...

here's the slow motion HOOP-OUT at CENTRAL MARKET post - this is music that I made w/ a partner about 5 years ago... when I just first tried out hooping....

Floating up into Wild West (slow motion)

This is a teaser of more slow motion instruction videos I will be making -- Future one's with music / voice over... Floating up is where you place your hand behind you, grab the hoop, TURN!! TURN!! shoot the elbow up - notice the hand grip change at the top - moving into "Wild West" which is about spunk and attitude!

back in AUSTiN - back in HOOP EFFECT --

yey! i'm so glad to be home!
Switzerland / Denver was awesome -
I didn't hoop as much as I would've like due to space / weather constraints...
tho I eventually did hoop for my Oma - and she was quite happy -
she enjoyed spinning the hoop in a circle with me - and passing it off, holding it, having the lights around her.. she can no longer walk and no longer knows who I am.
it seemed that she did enjoy just the simplicity of playing with a "toy" in a sense - rather than looking a
photos and being told "this is you!" "do you remember who this is?" - it's so hard to be 93 and just not know anymore... :(
but the hoop made her laugh and it made me so happy!

thanks to Sonie and Cheryl for making my first HOOPCLASS back so awesome -
on Valentines Night after my gig at Momos I hooped it up to Dan Dyer - and I just felt like a huge load was lifted of me - the joy and power that hooping brings to my life is so exceptional. I'm constantly in awe of it and giving thanks for this activity that truly brings me so much joy.
I'm making hoops for my new beginner class peeps and looking forward to Saturday -- not only to teach hooping - but to PLAY the NinA SimONE TRIBUTE (i've been practicing soooo much PiANO!!!) yey!
happy day!

hooping in Switzerland?

a little bit... some...
not as much as I would like - my time here has been shelling out items from the attic, closets, boxes, chests.... essentially cleaning out my Oma's (grandmother's) house and history... deciding what my mom and I should keep or not...
We collect so many things... and in the end they're just things... and we forget so much anyway... It's just a wake up call to not always hold on...
I haven't been hooping because of the small space I'm living in... even though I
brought my 2 new matched pair of LED hoops that I made... they're a bit mean though - the tubing is hard! sometimes very... owieee! too heavy maybe...
and I brought a larger hoop that I haven't pieced together...

I don't know what's with me. My enthusiasm here is a little sadly faded...
I'm jet lagged.. and visiting my 93 year old Oma that can't remember anything from her life, let alone us... it's really hard... Bless her heart... :'(
Being old is tough. It really really is...

She will see me hoop before I go. I'm determined. It will happen. and she'll love it!
I'm just easing in slowly to the Swiss nursing home vibe...
it's super conservative here.
ahh... small towns... they're the same everywhere...
gossipy and kinda?! boring...

looking forward to getting back to Austin in hOOP effecT

Kansas City was cooL!

I dropped the hoop motherload in KC. awesome hoopcircle on Saturday at Sunshine Yoga. Had a lovely 6 piece class that was inspired and fun. Brie and a couple of her fabulous hoopgurlz showed as well as a couple newbeeez. It was rad - I really enjoyed facing the group and making the eye contact and watching them. I think when we have a mirror in front of us we focus so much on ourselves.
"what does it look like" thoughts....
hooping is much much much more on "feeling" it that seeing what it looks like. We have to feel the move, or the "pe-a-ce" - the grounding and control within. I think we can discover more by listening to these sensations than by "watching" ourselves.
I realized that I needed to learn how to communicate "right" and "left" reversed (when not facing the same direction as the class) that took some thinking...
It was fun - thanks to Kelli Austin at Sunshine Yoga
and Brie "Breeze" of http://www.kaivalyahoops.com/
THanks YA"LL.
I'm about to be taking off on a family venture in Switzerland.
Hoops and hoop practice are joining the trip. Of course.
Collapsables are very handy! just fixed up a matching LED duo last night!

Blogging

Blogggg - ok i will... out of hoop commitment.
committed to hoop every possible day in 2009. yes!?
Obama began his speech - "i stand here today - humbled"
i felt humbled too by the hoop today. in outflow - working on my knee hooping --
eek - very humbled...
gggrreat tho because a commitment to
controlling the hoop is discipline and reward to me... no doubt...
i'm tripping out a bit because since starting the hoopclasses
twice a week - i'm already stronger in my arms, back, abs - I feel
it!! - and i'm just so stoked - to be teaching - to be working out -
to be pushing more and going for it! I hope everyone is spending the time
to give themselves the hoop love!
i'm so thankful for my 2009 push into more hoop commitment -
and the classes are an amazing help! and thank you to those who've been coming!
yey!!
I'm going to be posting here - my personal hoop practice / performance / work / class / freestyle / whateverrz / experiences.
Just for fun! I encourage everyone to make a hoop blog that
they can share with their friends and families and hoop peeps.
Show your commitment! pics! videos! experiences in your own hoop blog.

I wannna read!!! I wanna see!!! let's SHARE! POST!!
I'm posting a video from 2 days ago - some slow motion hoop action.... some of my trippy music too!

happy inauguration day ya'll!!!!!!
